Community School girls win state; Immokalee's Pierre, Estero's Montoya finish second CHRIS GIRANDOLA, Special to the Daily News DADE CITY — A week ago, Community School girls cross country coach Cassie Barone marvelled at how St. John Neumann had qualified either a boys or girls team for the state meet for the 15th straight year. She told her team that the Seahawks program had the makings of a similar run. On Saturday, at the FHSAA cross country finals held at Little Everglades Ranch in Dade City, her girls added another cornerstone to that foundation with the Seahawks’ second straight Class 1A title. “It was a big goal of ours,” Barone said. “We came in hoping to have a good race, and I told them as long as we leave it all on the track and do all they could, that’s all we were looking for. They really put it out there, and we ran really smart race.” In Class 2A, Immokalee’s Joane Pierre and Estero’s Erick Montoya each went down to the wire but finished in second place by three seconds.
