Team RaceIn our hypothetical preview, Circle Christian is ahead of Oak Hall by 25 points. Circle Christian scores 84 points and Oak Hall comes in with 109. Close behind Oak Hall are First Academy and Maclay, scoring 112 and 117 points, respectively. Circle Christian has had a great season so far, only losing to one 1A team - Oak Hall. Circle Christian’s top two have run under 20 minutes and their entire top five is under 21. A 25 point lead going into State makes these girls very confident they can succeed on Saturday. There are three teams that will be pushing for the podium in the girls 1A race. Oak Hall, First Academy, and Maclay. These teams have not convened at a single meet with a full squad yet this season. Oak Hall has some impressive performances on the books this year, including second place finishes at the Ridgeview Bob Hans Invitational and Alligator Lake XC Invitational, and are District and Region champions. Oak Hall, led by Grace Blair, scored just 36 points at the Region 2 meet. Oak Hall last saw the podium in 2014, where they finished second. First Academy finished second at the Region 3 meet, losing only to state-leading Circle Christian. They have competed in many large meets this season, preparing them well for the State meet’s top-tier talent. Maclay finished sixth at the FSU XC Invitational, in front of all other 1A teams. They are this year’s District 3 and Region 1 champions. The Marauders finished second at last year’s FHSAA 1A Cross Country State Championships, losing by 45 points to Circle Christian.
Individual RaceSamantha Folio has led 1A all season long. The Holy Trinity senior has run 18:34 this season, 40 seconds faster than her next closest competitor. Her PR comes from the District 11 meet, so it seems Folio is geared up and ready for State. Caroline Willis of Maclay ran 19:14 at the FSU XC Invitational this year, a season best for her. Willis is the District 3 and Region 1 champion. As a senior, Willis knows this is her last shot to grab the gold. Grace Blair of Oak Hall is currently ranked third in 1A. Blair has yet to match her PR of 18:34 this season, but a season best performance at Region 2 tells me she is not ready to give up. Watch out for Grace Blair. Maya Espinosa of Baker, Olivia Rovin of Shorecrest Prep, and Sinkenesh Parker of Circle Christian have also run under 19:30 this season and will most likely be seen in the chase pack.
